Meet Lizzie Borden, the 19th-century icon of domestic horror who became infamous after being accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892. She was acquitted. The bodies remained dead. History, naturally, decided to turn the whole thing into folklore.

Featuring a stark vintage-style portrait of Lizzie Borden surrounded by blood-red textures, crossed axes and distressed typography, this graphic looks like something you might find nailed to the door of a particularly unpleasant Victorian manor. We’ll leave the historical speculation to the true-crime obsessives.

What we do know is that Lizzie Borden became an enduring symbol of murder, scandal, rebellion, social suspicion and the spectacular collapse of the concept of a wholesome family home.

And frankly, that’s more interesting than another inspirational quote printed on beige cotton.
